The basic aim of the game is to outscore the opposition. The pitch has four goal posts - two at each end - with one large and a smaller one to its side. The games are divided into four quarters of 20 minutes, with teams changing ends at the conclusion of each. To start a game each team has 22 players, of which 18 can be on the pitch at any one time and these are officiated by a total of seven different umpires (three field, two goal, and two boundary). These rules have to be adhered to in all Australian Football League (AFL) matches, and are taken into consideration with any Aussie Rules betting guide, which can cover the countless AFL betting markets that are available for every match of any season. Anybody watching Australian Rules Football for the first time will quickly appreciate that it is a fast-paced, exciting game but it is also quite unique and as such, exists with its own set of rules.
